At Familia Fine Foods They Treat You Like Family

Luis Velasquez & Juliana Berrio; husband and wife, are owners and operators of Familia Fine Foods in Burlington. Both have Columbian backgrounds and share a passion for good food. Six years ago they decided to start a home business of preparing frozen foods; ready-made food for people on-the-go and for those who share their appreciation of Latin and Colombian cuisine. Within a year, demand for their food led them to opening their own restaurant where you can eat in, or pick up frozen, homemade takeout to enjoy later. Catering is a dominant part of their business.
I sampled the #TakeOutToHelpOut special, offered during this event; featuring the Burrito Bowl with guacamole and a mini cake filled with guava, for $15. The tasty Burrito Bowl is served hot on a bed of lettuce with black beans, Mexican rice, choice of protein, pico de gallo, corn, and topped with cheese.
From the frozen, ready to eat meals, I enjoyed the Quinoa Rice and Chicken Soup, generously flavoured with fresh herbs.
The chicken in the Fajita was juicy and well seasoned with sautéed onions and peppers, atop a mound of fragrant Colombian rice. The rich savour of the beans give this dish its character.
Their Coconut Curried Chicken has an aromatic essence, rivaled only by the flavours in the dish.
A must-have ‘side’ to take home are the plantain slices. The unexpected sweetness made me wish that I had more.
The general flavour profiles of the foods that I tasted at Familia, were exceptional and portions were generous.
